Rucaparib is a tricyclic indole PARP1, 2 and 3 inhibitor that suppresses DNA repair and thereby causes eventual cell death. Owing to its ability to prevent ordinary DNA repair, it can be used to great effect in conjunction with agents that actively induce DNA damage in the treatment of certain cancers.
Specifically, it is used to treat advanced stages of ovarian cancer associated with mutations of the BRCA1 and 2 genes. Rucaparib has also been studied to a limited extent as an alternative to standard treatments for advanced cases of prostate cancer. Rucaparib phosphate is a specific phosphate salt form of the compound.
